GA no source data

I have the Cookie Notice plugin installed on my site. When users click on the OK button to proceed browsing the site all subsequent traffic recorded in GA has direct / none source and medium. I’m aware that this is a config issue – can someone explain in non techie way what I need to do to resolve this and begin to see true source data in GA?
