We checked it and this does look like a regression related to the recent PhotoSwipe major update, not an intentional behavior change.
What changed:
– on mobile, the PhotoSwipe integration started applying too much slide padding, which made images open much smaller than before instead of using the available viewport width
– the old zoom-back-to-thumbnail close animation was also lost during the migration, so the lightbox now fades out instead of minimizing back to the original image
So in short: no, this was not meant to change from a UX point of view.
We have identified the cause and prepared a fix to restore the larger mobile opening size and the thumbnail-based open/close transition behavior. It’s going to be available in the upcoming 1.3.7 release of Photoswipe RLG addon.
